Will there be Heeramandi season 2? Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali answers the burning question | Web-series News

While his first-ever streaming series, the period drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, continues its successful run on Netflix, cinephiles have begun questioning director Sanjay Leela Bhansali about the possibility of a sequel. Although Bhansali had previously suggested that Heeramandi is a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence, he recently addressed these enquiries upfront, stating that the decision is not up to him.

“First of all, thank you for loving season one. But whether season two happens or not depends on Netflix announcing it if they want to go ahead with it. They are the producers and the best producers I have ever worked with in 30 years. I keep telling them I’ve done some good karma to have had the chance to work with people like them. But the decision to do season two comes from them, not from me,” the filmmaker said during a chat with Bollywood Hungama.

A semi-historical drama set in pre-Independence Lahore, Heeramandi follows the lives of a group of courtesans and noblemen whose personal conflicts collide with the freedom struggle. During a chat with IMDb last week, Sanjay Leela Bhansali said, “We’ve made it, I’ve enjoyed making it, and I’m thankful to God that we made it… It was a very difficult project. Nobody else will ever be able to make Heeramandi again, nor will I be able to make it again, because it happens once.”

Bhansali also recently emphasised that his work is driven by a desire to provide audiences with an experience rather than merely generating profit.

In her review of the series, The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta wrote, “It’s when Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Netflix show turns its eyes on the faded grandeur of its ‘Lahore ki ranis’ in their gilded cages, grime peeking out from behind their finery, that the show is most effective.”
