Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga, who skipped Met Gala 2024, have become the subjects of AI-generated deepfakes from this year’s ‘fashion’s biggest night’. The three singers, notably absent from the annual event, were at the centre of a viral digital storm.
Rihanna, anticipated to make a grand appearance, became the focus of an AI-generated image, featuring in a stunning ivory and green gown, complete with an elaborate shoulder accent that towered over her head. According to People Magazine, the singer had to cancel her attendance due to a bout of the flu.
Katy fell victim to the deepfake phenomenon, with images of her circulating on Instagram in an ethereal ivory and green ball gown adorned with intricate foliage details. Even Perry’s mother was fooled by the convincing forgery, prompting the singer to issue a warning on her Instagram, “lol mom the AI got you too, BEWARE!” As opposed to white and green carpet, she is seen posing near a red and beige carpet.

But that was not all, minutes later, another user on X posted another image of Perry. She’s wearing a bronze corset that looks like a key to a garden. Unlike the first image, this one actually has the correct colour palette and scenery for this year’s gala. Her floral skirt seems like it was cut and paste onto her body, and the light is hitting her corset in an unnatural way.
“Katy Perry at home, lying on the couch, watching Peppa Pig with (her daughter) while looking at AI edits of herself at #MetGala,” wrote an X user, while another one commented, “More likes and retweets than actual pictures of celebs at the Met Gala.”
The theme of this year’s Met Gala, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, was accompanied by a dress code of The Garden of Time, which seemed to inspire the designs of the AI-generated gowns. Despite not attending, the three stars still managed to make an impact on the fashion world, albeit through a digitally manipulated lens.
