Kill goes international. It has been announced that the gory Indian actioner will be remade in Hollywood by 87Eleven Entertainment, the production company behind the Keanu Reeves-headlined John Wick franchise.

Starring Lakshya, Raghav Juyal and Tanya Maniktala, Kill is written and directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat. The film is backed by Karan Johar and Apoorva Mehta’s Dharma Productions, and Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain’s Sikhya Entertainment. The film will be released in the US on July 4 by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions. It will have its India opening on July 5.

“Kill is one of the most vivid, wild, and creative action movies I’ve seen recently,” said 87Eleven Entertainment’s Chad Stahelski, who has directed all four John Wick movies, and has produced an upcoming spin-off.

The filmmaker said that Kill features “relentless action sequences” that need to be seen by as wide an audience as possible. “It’s exciting to be developing an English-language version—we have big shoes to fill and I’m looking forward to working with Nikhil, Karan, Apoorva, Guneet, and Achin to achieve that.”

The announcement of the remake was made by Adam Fogelson, chair, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. In a joint statement, the producers said they were thrilled that a remake of Kill in English is already in the works. “Partnering with Lionsgate, the award-winning studio behind genre-defining action movies, has been incredibly gratifying. This announcement coming before the original film’s release is unprecedented and a big win for Indian cinema. We are truly honoured.”

Kill had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year in the Midnight Madness section, and was later screened at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film’s synopsis on TIFF’s official website reads, “A passenger train bound for New Delhi becomes a bloody battleground of brutal close-quarters combat as a pair of commandos square off against a 40-strong army of invading bandits.”

Festive offer

Lakshya was previously set to debut in the movies with Dostana 2, also starring Janhvi Kapoor and Kartik Aaryan. After shooting for a month, the film was shelved. He was then slated to star in Shanaya Kapoor debut Bedhadak, directed by Shashank Khaitan, which was also shelved.
