Dimple Kapadia was just a teenager when she fell in love with superstar Rajesh Khanna. They soon got married and she left the movies for a few years. In an earlier interview, Dimple once shared that she was quiet naive when she fell in love with Rajesh. In fact, she described herself as so “filmy” that even thought Rajesh would sing “Mere Sapno Ki Raani” for her in the mountains.

Talking at FICCI FLO Jaipur Chapter a few years ago, Dimple said, “Because I am such a filmy kid, you know I actually thought Rajesh Khanna ji would sing ‘Mere Sapno Ki Rani Kab Aayegi Tu’. He will take me to the mountains and sing.” As Dimple laughed while sharing the anecdote, she said that she was quite “young” when she met him and was strongly influenced by the movies.

“I swear I am not lying, because I was so young. And there was such an impact of the movies. Toh jab mountains pe pohanche aur gaana bhi nahi hua, hawa bhi nahi chali toh meri toh haalat kharab ho gayi (So when we reached on the mountains but there was no song and no gust of wind, I was in a bad state) because my dream was shattered. Because I seriously believed it. I mean how dumb can you get? But well that was me,” she said.

Dimple was asked about her best role in life during the same conversation and she said, “The best role of my life has been Mrs Rajesh Khanna. That’s been my best role.” Dimple and Rajesh stayed together for almost 8 years before getting separated but they never got divorced. They shared two daughters – Twinkle and Rinke Khanna.

Festive offer

Dimple spoke about her love story with Rajesh in the same chat and said that she met him soon after she signed Bobby. She was approached for Bobby when she was only 13 and there was a 15 year age gap between her and Rajesh Khanna. She recalled that after she signed Raj Kapoor’s film, she, along with other film celebrities, was called for a function to Ahmedabad. Rajesh was also on the same flight and they happened to be sitting next to each other. “So he sat next to me, and I was looking at him. Very cleverly I told him ‘vahan toh boht crowd hoga, bheed hogi, aap mera haath pakdoge na?’ He said ‘haan bilkul’. I said ‘hamesha ke liye?’ (I told him there will be so much crowd there, will you hold my hand? He said yes, of course. I asked forever?) I was very filmy and yeah, the rest is history. It happened.”

Rajesh Khanna passed away in 2021 at 69.
