After selling less than 5000 tickets prior to its release on Friday, the Ajay Devgn and Tabu-starrer Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha is having a dismal time at the box office on opening day. As predicted, the romantic thriller is headed for a disastrous debut at the ticket windows, and according to industry tracker Sacnilk, hasn’t even collected Rs 50 lakh by 4 pm on Friday. The film reported occupancy of just 6% for the morning shows.
The film’s current take stands at just Rs 38 lakh, and even with grosses from the typically lucrative nighttime shows still not accounted for, the movie is starting out not only on the back foot, but practically limbless. What’s surprising is that both Ajay Devgn and Tabu have delivered hit films this year alone; Ajay starred in the surprise blockbuster Shaitaan, while Tabu appeared in Crew. Both movies made a combined total of over Rs 200 crore in India. A couple of years ago, Ajay and Tabu had delivered Drishyam 2 together; the movie made over Rs 300 crore worldwide.

Ajay Devgn has been able to deliver consistent openings, with only two recent movies — Maidaan and Runway 34 — debuting with less than Rs 10 crore. Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha is poised to deliver his worst opening in perhaps two decades. His 2008 film Halla Bol opened to less than Rs 3 crore.
The movie also marks a low for the usually reliable director Neeraj Pandey, who broke out with A Wednesday and went on to deliver hits such as Baby and MS Dhoni: The Untold Story. In recent years, he has experienced success on streaming, with shows such as Special OPS, Khakee: The Bihar Chapter, and The Freelancer.
Also starring Shantanu Maheshwari, Saiee Manjrekar and Jimmy Sheirgill, Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha opened to poor reviews. Indian Express critic Shubhra Gupta awarded it two stars out of five, and wrote, “Ajay Devgn-Tabu film tries to be the kind of ‘mature’ romance that Bollywood rarely attempts, but doesn’t have the courage or conviction, or the tools, to make it’s own version of a bitter-sweet Bridges of Madison County.”
The movie is releasing alongside Ulajh, a political thriller starring Janhvi Kapoor in the lead role, alongside Gulshan Devaiah and Roshan Mathew. Ulajh is headed for an equally poor opening, leaving the door open for the holdover hit Deadpool & Wolverine to dominate for another week.
