Gulshan Devaiah opens up about underperformance of Janhvi Kapoor-starrer Ulajh: ‘The ones who don’t embrace the struggle…’ | Bollywood News

With director Sudhanshu Saria’s spy thriller Ulajh also underperforming in theatres, actor Janhvi Kapoor’s streak of box-office disappointments appears to continue for a longer period. In the two days since its release, the movie has recorded an India nett collection of just Rs 2.9 crore — Rs 1.15 crore on Friday and Rs 1.75 crore on Saturday, industry tracker Sacnilk reported. Its worldwide gross is currently Rs 3.75 crore, with no significant improvement expected in the forthcoming days due to the film’s mixed reviews.

Meanwhile, actor Gulshan Devaiah, who played a key role in Ulajh, took to social media on Sunday to address comments about the film’s poor performance. Quote-tweeting the link to a news article on Ulajh’s day 2 box office collection with the headline “Janhvi Kapoor film continues to struggle,” Devaiah noted that struggles are part of the road to success. “Struggle is the salt that makes success taste good. The ones who don’t embrace the struggle will never achieve anything worthwhile. This is a tough business. Period,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Devaiah also replied to a comment suggesting that the film should have been released on OTT. “Sir it’s question of removing the big screen obsession and going where the consumers are going – OTT is the future. This would have found love appreciation and big numbers on OTT. But wrongly distributed by going to cinemas (sic),” a user wrote in the comment section of the actor’s tweet.

In response, Devaiah stated, “Feature films are meant to be seen on the big screen. Hit flop toh chalta rahta hai (Hits and flops will keep happening). As pragmatic as I am about a lot of things, I’m not willing to let go of my idealism when it comes to cinema. I also don’t expect people to understand this. It’s a very personal thing for me.”

The failure of Ulajh has compounded Bollywood’s difficulties, especially at a time when the industry is desperately seeking a hit. Unfortunately, both the highly anticipated movies that arrived last weekend — Ulajh and director Neeraj Pandey’s Ajay Devgn and Tabu-starrer Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha — underperformed at the box office.

Festive offer

In her review of Ulajh, The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta wrote, “The lead, played by Janhvi Kapoor, is upped at the expense of the other characters, who feel underwritten, underserving the film.”
