Counted among the most prolific filmmakers of his time, Subhas Ghai has directed films like Pardes, Lam Lakhan, Hero, Taal and Khal Nayak among others. The filmmaker may be away from the sets, but during his appearances, he always shared anecdotes about the films and actors he has worked with in his nearly five decades-long career. Bollywood’s legendary director is set to drop some major revelations in a conversation with Arbaaz Khan. Known for his iconic films and collaborations with superstars like Anil Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan, and Jackie Shroff, Ghai spoke about his filmography.
In a teaser for the explosive episode, Ghai doesn’t mince words when describing his Ram Lakhan stars, labelling Anil Kapoor the “actor” and Jackie Shroff the “bad actor.” Ghai also spoke about being called the ‘showman’ even as the features Ghai’s unfiltered opinions on other Bollywood heavyweights. He bluntly calls Shatrughan Sinha “overconfident” and reveals the veteran actor’s notorious habit of arriving late on set.
The filmmaker said, “Paanch kism ke actor hote hai sir. Ek hota hai non-actor, aur ek hota hai bad actor (There are five types of actors, one is non-actor and another is bad actor). Bad actor was Jackie Shroff. Actor is Anil Kapoor... joh overconfident the who hamesha Shatrughan Sinha the. Shatrughan ka sabse bada problem tha ki woh time pe kabhi nahi pahuchta tha (Shatrughan Sinha was over-confident and his biggest issue was that he was never on time).”
Ghai also opens up about his tumultuous relationship with Shah Rukh Khan during the making of Pardes, admitting to frequent disagreements with the superstar. Interestingly, the filmmaker shares that after the success of Karz, he consciously decided to avoid working with contemporary stars to maintain creative control over his films. “Jaise maine Pardes mein Shah Rukh ke saath kaam kiya, uska aur mera man-mutav chalta rehta tha, tu-tu main-main chalti rahti thi… phir Karz (1980) ke baad maine socha jitney bhi current stars hai unke saath picture nahi banani hai agar picture asli banani hai (I used to have tiffs with Shah Rukh during Pardes. After Karz I thought I will not work with current stars if I want to make a good film),” he said stressing he consciously decided to avoid working with contemporary stars to maintain creative control over his films.
Despite being hailed as the “showman” of Indian cinema, Ghai humbly dismisses the title, stating, “he does not like to see himself like that.” His illustrious filmography, including hits like Kalicharan, Vishwanath, Karz, Hero, Vidhaata, Meri Jung, Ram Lakhan, Saudagar, Khalnayak, Pardes, and Taal, undeniably solidifies his status as a cinematic legend.
In an earlier interview with ANI, Subhash revealed that Anil Kapoor was willing to go bald to play Ballu in Khal Nayak, a part Sanjay Dutt ended up playing despite initial obstacle. “Five or six heroes came to me saying they want to do Khalnayak. Anil Kapoor came and said I am ready to go bald. I said I will only cast the person who fits the role and the only guy who fit the bill here was Sanjay Dutt,” he said.
