Former actor Imran Khan recalled a harrowing on-set experience, which compelled him to have a conversation with his co-star, who was left physically injured because of it. He said that they filmed a ‘scene of sexual violence’ for the movie Kidnap, and that it left his co-star Minissha Lamba with bruises all over her arms. Imran said that he was devastated, and that he recoils from violence to this day.
Appearing on the We Are Yuvaa YouTube channel for a conversation about his experiences in the film industry, his struggles with mental health, and how they have shaped him as a person, Imran was asked if there’s any film that he regrets doing in hindsight. He named Kidnap, the 2008 thriller directed by Sanjay Gupta, which also starred Sanjay Dutt in the lead role. Kidnap was released shortly after Imran’s debut film, the romantic comedy Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na.
He recalled, “There is this part in Kidnap that I found very uncomfortable. There’s this quote-unquote romantic song, called ‘Mausam’, and the scene after that is one of sexual violence, where this character drags her back to the den, and it seems for a moment that he’s going to sexually assault her. In fact, it begins that way, and then he stops and pulls back. I don’t think that scene was necessary, and frankly, I found it very, very difficult to shoot.”
Imran continued, “I spent the day shooting that sequence, and I went home that evening, and I found myself to be very, very, very disturbed. I couldn’t sleep, I threw up. I just couldn’t get it out of my head. The next morning, I went to Minissha, and she had these dark, purple bruises all over her arm from where I’d grabbed her. And I was like, ‘Oh my God, what have I done?’ So, I sat down with her and I said that I needed to talk it through with her because I was uncomfortable with how it had all played out. She was super-chill about it. She set my mind at ease… But I’ve never quite felt okay about it.”
In a previous interview, Imran recalled how everybody began to view him differently on the set of Kidnap after Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’s first promotional material came out, and indicated that he was going to be a major star. Imran said that he was made to sit outside the dubbing studio and eat his meal on a plastic stool, but after people around got a sense of his potential stardom, he was invited to have his meals in air-conditioned rooms. Imran has also said that he has become averse to violence, and that he believes that the cancellation of his planned comeback project, a spy-thriller series, was for the best because it would’ve required him to wield guns.
