Former actor Imran Khan opened up about his separation from wife Avantika Malik, whom he’d been with since they were teenagers. Imran and Avantika divorced in 2019 after eight years of marriage; they have a daughter named Imara. In an interview, Imran said that the decision to separate was heart-wrenching, but it needed to be done because they’d begun to settle into patterns.

In an appearance on the We Are Yuvaa YouTube channel, Imran was asked how he dealt with the stigma and shame associated not only with opening up about mental health troubles, but with being divorced. He said, “I don’t have that sense of shame and stigma around it. It was, ultimately, a choice that I made, because I understood that we were in a place where we weren’t enabling and empowering each other to be the strongest and best versions of ourselves.”

He continued, “This can happen in long-term relationships. You start to get into patterns, which may not be the healthiest. And in this case, in order for both of us to thrive, we needed to take a difficult call. It’s not easy; it’s gut-wrenching, heart-wrenching. But ultimately, it has been instrumental in my becoming healthier, stronger. I don’t think there’s anything wrong in people changing the status of their relationship.”

He said that the idea of ‘two people binding themselves to each other for life’, without question or any room for re-negotiation works only if they’re happy and empowering each other. “If you’re not, then absolutely, change the contract,” he said. Imran also praised his current partner, actor Lekha Washington, and said that she and him entered the relationship ‘consciously’, with the intent to ‘evolve, grow and heal’.

Festive offer

Imran and Avantika share joint custody of their daughter, who divides her time between them. Imran said that he is a ‘hands-on’ dad, and tries to participate in every aspect of his daughter’s life, without the help of nannies or any other assistants.
