Shah Rukh Khan dazzled his Italian fans at the 77th Locarno Film Festival, where he received a career achievement honour. Dressed in a sharp black tuxedo, Shah Rukh captivated the audience and festival organisers with a heartwarming speech infused with his signature wit. The actor also greeted fans who had gathered at the festival to catch a glimpse of him.
The Jawan actor began his speech by acknowledging the warm reception he received, even comparing Locarno to India. “Thank you all for welcoming me with such wide arms – wider than the ones I do on screen. It’s a very beautiful, very cultural, very artistic, and extremely hot city of Locarno. So many people stuffed up in a little square and so hot. It’s just like being home in India,” he said.
During the speech, a fan screamed ‘I love you’ from the audience. Shah Rukh replied, “I love you also. All dramatics continues after the serious speech. It’s the Locarno Film Festival, we all need to sound intellectual, ok?”
He added, “My day has been wonderful, the food has been nice, my Italian is improving, so has been my cooking.” He then spoke in Italian, humorously translating, “I can cook pasta and pizza also. I’m learning here in Locarno.”
Reflecting on the significance of art and creativity, Shah Rukh Khan said, “Art is the act of affirming life above all. It goes beyond every man-made boundary into a space of liberation. It need not be political. It need not be polemical. It need not sermonize. It need not intellectualize. It need not moralize. Art and cinema only need to say what it feels from the heart, to express its own truth. And that, to me, is the biggest creativity, honestly.”
He added, “There is no creativity without love, which is a language which transcends all languages and is comprehended by everyone around the world. So creativity, love, and giving joy to me, is one and the same thing.”
Summarising his prolific career, he said, “I’ve been a villain, I’ve been a champ, I’ve been a superhero, I’ve been a zero, I’ve been a rejected fan, and I’ve been a very, very resilient lover.” He continued, “This award here, which, for the life of me, I’ve been trying… I can’t pronounce,” he joked and added, “the Leopard award for being the most awesome in the world, in the history of humility and kindness and goodness.”
Concluding his speech in Hindi, Shah Rukh expressed his gratitude, “I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart and from India. Namashkaar and dhanyawaad (Hello, thank you). God bless you all.”
Shah Rukh Khan was honored with the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and in tribute to his career, the festival screened Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2002 film Devdas. On the professional front, Shah Rukh will next be seen in Sujoy Ghosh’s The King, alongside his daughter Suhana Khan.
