AR Rahman is known worldwide for his compositions. While everybody is convinced that the music director brings magic to every tune he composes, lyricist Gulzar believes it is his spirituality that makes his songs divine. In a recent interview, Gulzar revealed how Rahman often visits Haji Ali and Ajmer Sharif to find patience and connect with his inner-self.
While talking about the Fiza song “Piya Haj Ali”, Gulzar revealed the back story of how Rahman composed the song, while rest of the Fiza songs were composed by Anu Malik. He told O2India, “I would say this one song has two composers. Anu Malik’s composition was also melodious. Anu was also quite popular for his unique style. I think because Khalid Mohammed was friends with AR Rahman, he wanted a Sufi Hamd for the film. He approached AR Rahman only after taking permission from Anu Malik. And that’s how Rahman composed tunes for Haji Ali.”
Gulzar added, “It wasn’t like Sufi songs didn’t exist before, but a new era of Sufi songs emerged and the credit goes to Rahman. Lately, any film is termed as Sufi song. It’s a huge misunderstanding. Just putting the word ‘Maula’ into a song doesn’t make it a sufi song. Its the content, the emotion and divine feeling that brought an era of Sufi songs. And AR Rahman is deeply entrenched in the process that inspires a sacred voice. Its not like he is wearing it over his skin, it is his inner voice.”
Speaking about what makes AR Rahman unique, Gulzar said, “Rahman believes in spirituality. He is a religious man. He keeps faith in God. If there’s a shrine on the way to the airport, he wouldn’t proceed without offering prayers. When he is in Mumbai, he often visits Haji Ali or Ajmer Sharif whenever he feels lonely or whenever he wants to connect with his inner self or feels scattered. Since he is a spiritual person, he visits Ajmer Sharif when he wants to experience patience and gather himself. That’s Rahman.”
Fiza, directed by Khalid Mohammad, starred Karisma Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, and Jaya Bachchan in the lead roles. As much as the film was praised for its story, its music too hit the right chords with the audience. While most of the songs were composed by Anu Malik, the Sufi song “Piya Haji Ali” was composed by AR Rahman.
