Kangana Ranaut, currently promoting her upcoming film Emergency, recently shared some amusing stories about her attempts to learn driving. In a recent interaction, the Queen actor recalled how she hit an auto-rickshaw during her first driving test to obtain a license. She also revealed that after seeing her peer Deepika Padukone driving an SUV, she was motivated to learn driving again but ended up hitting a police jeep and decided to give up driving altogether.
Speaking to Mashable India, Kangana shared, “I’ve tried learning to drive so many times, but both times I went for my driving test, I ended up hitting something. Deepika Padukone and I entered Bollywood around the same time—her debut was in 2007, mine was in 2006. We were even in the same driving school back then, both living in Bandra at the time.”
Sharing her experience of her first driving test, she said, “The first time I took the driving test, I drove my Santro out and ended up hitting an auto-rickshaw. The driver came out, yelling, and I realized I had pressed the accelerator instead of the brake—twice! The auto driver got so scared he ran away, probably thinking, ‘This woman is crazy.’ After that, I gave up on driving.”
Talking about seeing Deepika drive, which gave her the motivation to learn driving again, she said, “Five years later, I saw Deepika driving her SUV and thought, ‘We were in the same driving school and learned at the same time, but she’s driving, and I still can’t.’ It became a matter of pride, so I decided to try again. This time, I had a BMW. I practiced for a week and went for the driving test again. But once again, I hit something—this time, it was a police jeep. My driver was like, ‘Madam apne police ki gadi thok di (Madam, you hit a police car!)’. I again did the same mistake of pressing the accelerator instead of the brake. At that time, my film Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai had released, so the police recognized me. Luckily, the police jeep wasn’t damaged, only my BMW was, so I asked them to let me go, and they agreed, but not before telling my driver to take the wheel instead of me. I gave up after that.”
Kangana was last seen in Chandramukhi 2 and Tejas, last year. Both films didn’t perform well at the box office. She’ll now be seen playing the role of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in Emergency, releasing in cinemas on September 6.
