Salim Khan, along with Javed Akhtar, wrote some of the most popular Hindi films of the 1970s, and many of those films starred Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role. In fact, it was through their films that Bachchan became synonymous with the ‘angry young man’ persona. After Salim-Javed abruptly parted ways in the early 1980s, Bachchan’s career was affected as well. In a recent interview, Salim Khan said that if he was in Amitabh’s place, he would have tried to stop the duo from breaking up. Salim-Javed are often credited for having played a huge part in Bachchan’s stardom.

Asked if Bachchan was affected by their break-up, Salim told NDTV, “Of course, it would have affected him. He must have been upset about it.” He continued, “If I was in Amitabh’s place, I would have said that… if Javed saab went to him or I went to him, I would have said that Salim-Javed must stay together. ‘You guys have a good thing going with each other. Why break it up’?”

Salim then added, “If I was in his place, that’s what I would have recommended, I don’t know what he said.” He implied that he did not speak to Bachchan about their break-up, but also hinted that Javed Akhtar perhaps did. Salim Khan was then asked if he ever spoke to the actor about this, and he said, “He doesn’t speak much to anybody. He doesn’t get too attached to people.”

Salim was also asked if people treated him differently after he went solo, and he admitted that the industry’s attitude had changed towards him. “Our name had some value, Salim-Javed. If we come back together now, that will have some value.’

Festive offer

Salim-Javed had recently announced that they will come back together for another film. The screenwriters made this announcement at the trailer launch of their Prime Video documentary series Angry Young Men. At the event, Javed said, “We are going to write (the script) now. I have spoken to Salim saab, ek picture hum aur likh de (let us write one more film together). Uss zamane mein bhi humari price zyada thi, iss zamane mein toh bohot bhi zyada hogi. Woh dekh lijiyega (We used to charge a lot back then, we will charge even more now. Do consider that).”

Salim-Javed wrote some popular films like Sholay, Deewar, Yaadon Ki Baarat, Don, Trishul, among others.
