Fans were quick to draw comparisons between Ananya Panday’s character in her debut web show Call Me Bae and Kareena Kapoor’s iconic role of Poo from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. In a recent interaction, Ananya addressed these comparisons, clarifying that the intention was not to imitate Kareena’s role but to pay homage to the beloved character.
During an interaction with Instant Bollywood, Ananya was asked about Karan Johar’s statement during the trailer launch about her character, Bae, being a version of Poo. Reacting to his statement, she said, “I don’t think we are trying to touch or even come close to what Bebo did because she is a literal icon and the queen. What she did was a legacy; she played such an iconic character. It’s our ode to her. If Bae can become even one percent as lovable as Poo did, then I think we all will be happy.”
The web show’s director, Collin D’Cunha, added, “Every generation needs to have their own Poo. Some of my assistants, who were born in 2001, haven’t watched K3G. That’s how young they are. They are still 22-23 years old.”
In Call Me Bae, Ananya Panday stars as a South Delhi born with a silver spoon, who, after losing everything overnight, is forced to move to Mumbai and live independently. She lands a job as a journalist and uncovers a major investigative story. The show chronicles her journey as she navigates the world of journalism, all while maintaining her unique style.
The cast also includes Vihaan Samat, Varun Sood, Gurfateh Pirzada, Muskkaan Jaferi, and Niharika Dutt in pivotal roles. Call Me Bae is produced by Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment.
