A former Royal Marine who was awaiting trial after being charged with spying on Hong Kong activists in the UK has been found dead in a park.
Matthew Trickett, 37, a Home Office immigration enforcement officer, was found on Sunday evening by a member of the public in Grenfell park in Maidenhead, Berkshire. Police said his death was “unexplained”.
He had appeared at Westminster magistrates court on Tuesday 14 May to face two charges under the National Security Act 2023.
A Thames Valley police spokesperson said: “Officers attended the scene and found a man. Emergency treatment was commenced but sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“An investigation is ongoing into the death, which is currently being treated as unexplained. Formal identification has taken place and we can confirm the man is Matthew Trickett, aged 37, from Maidenhead.
“His family have been informed and they are being supported by officers. We would kindly ask that their privacy is respected at this difficult time.
“A postmortem will be conducted in due course.”
