Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, who had well-documented differences with actor Aamir Khan in the 1990s, spoke about putting together a film with him and the veteran actor Mumtaz. He said that Aamir was disinterested in the project, although he did come over to his house one day for a memorable meeting. They would later go on to work together in Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahin and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, before falling out over the film Ghulam.
In an interview with Radio Nasha, the filmmaker was asked about the unmade project with Aamir, in which Mumtaz was supposed to play the mother of his character. Asked if Aamir’s comments about the project not panning out are accurate, the filmmaker said, “No, I had narrated an idea to Aamir once. Woh aaya tha, bahut ice cream kha gaya mere ghar pe aake (He came over to my house and ate a lot of ice cream). I remember we used to order ice cream from Natural’s. He’d come over with his first wife, and the power went off. He ate all the ice cream.”
The filmmaker said that he narrated the story to Aamir, who didn’t commit to it immediately. “A week later, he told me that he didn’t like the story. I said, ‘Then we won’t make it’. Those were the days when news would spread even if two person met casually. It was a story about a mother and son. It led to me finding a book about the greatest scripts ever made, which had the screenplay for It Happened One Night in it. I showed the book to Aamir, and he said that we could make something out of it. That’s how Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahin came to be.”
In a recent interview with Indian Express, the director opened up about walking away from the film Ghulam after Aamir posed a question to him. “I choose to walk away from it. I told Aamir, I didn’t think movies meant so much to me that I would dedicate my entire life to it. It doesn’t mean so much to me and I’d be lying if I say otherwise,” Bhatt said, adding that Aamir was “quite stunned” by his integrity.
