Recently, Ajay Devgn recalled a hilarious anecdote sharing how he signed Mahesh Bhatt’s Zakhm while he was in the shower. Now, just a few days later, Mahesh Bhatt reacted to the incident and shared his side of the story. In a recent interview, Mahesh Bhatt recalled meeting Ajay Devgn for the first time and revealed how his father Veeru Devgn requested him to cast in one of his films.
In an interview with India Today, Mahesh Bhatt was told about the incident shared by Ajay Devgn and asked if that’s how things worked between them. “It depends on the unique relationship the maker has with the particular actor. There was a runup to the call I made. And the very fact that I got through to him while he was in the shower was because of that unique runup that we had,” he recalled.
He further shared that Ajay’s father Veeru and him started their journeys together with the film Mera Gaon Mera Desh. “He was the one who told me, why don’t you take my son? If he will work with you, he will become an actor as he is already a star,” he shared. The actor had already become a star with his first film Phool Aur Kaante (1991).
Mahesh Bhatt recalled his first meeting with Ajay Devgn and said, “The first time I saw him, he was crossing the street near Chandan cinema in Juhu and I stopped the car and called him. When he came, I saw a silence in his eyes. I was like I spoke to your father and he wants me to work with you and we will. And he looked at me and he knew that I meant it and I saw in his eyes that he knew that one day I will go to him. Then I went to him for Naajayaz, where I cast him opposite the great Naseeruddin Shah. He was very intimated with the thought of working with him.” Mahesh Bhatt then revealed how even Naseeruddin confessed that he was astounded with Ajay’s performance in Najaayaz.
Mahesh Bhatt said, “It’s (Naajayaz) not among his very good performances but he was very good in that film. Then I was doing the autobiographical film of my mother, I just thought of him and called him. I think its because the trust I had. An actor is the most vulnerable creature. The director’s heart has to be like a mother’s womb, and he must create an environment where the actor feels he can be safe and perhaps that was what with Ajay Devgn.”
Zakhm, made in 1998, was based on the life of Mahesh Bhatt’s mother Shirin Mohammad Ali. The film starred Ajay Devgn, Pooja Bhatt, Nagarjuna and Kunal Kemmu in the lead roles. The film bagged Ajay Devgn his first National Award for Best Actor. Mahesh Bhatt had stopped directing films after the 1998 film. However, he made a comeback with the 2020 film Sadak 2.
