Bollywood actors have an odd relationship with body hair. While director Anurag Kashyap once claimed that he was ghosted after suggesting that Salman Khan grow chest hair for Tere Naam, fashion designer Manish Malhotra recalled that Akshay Kumar was ‘horrified’ when he suggested that he trim his chest hair for a role.
Appearing on the We Are Yuvaa YouTube channel, Manish said that women back in the day were very specific about the kind of clothes they wanted to be seen wearing, while the men didn’t really care. “I remember we were in Switzerland, we were shooting a song for Dhadkan, and I told Akshay Kumar to trim his chest hair because he was wearing a white shirt. And he was horrified. It was for ‘Dil Ne Yeh Kaha Hai Dil Se’. And the director, Dharmesh Darshan, was very supportive of me, and he said, ‘Yes, it’s the correct thing’.”

Manish also recalled the standard brief that he’d be given for dressing women: ‘Sexy lagni chahiye (She should look sexy).’ He said, “I remember one time, the brief was, ‘She’s going to a funeral but she should look sexy’. And I kept thinking what does that mean.”
While Manish didn’t go into detail about how his suggestion to Akshay impacted their working relationship, Anurag Kashyap certainly felt the brunt when he told Salman to grow out his chest hair for Tere Naam. “I was not asked to leave Tere Naam, the film ghosted on me,” Anurag told Bollywood Bubble, adding, “I asked Salman a certain thing, after that nobody got back to me. I didn’t not even know when the film started shooting, and what happened. I just asked Salman to grow chest hair and he also didn’t say anything. It was the producer who reacted. I’ve never met (Salman) since then. I have come across him once or twice and said ‘hello’.”
