National Award-winning make-up and prosthetics artist Preetisheel Singh is the brain behind the much discussed look of Amitabh Bachchan’s Ashwatthama in Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD.
In an interview with Mashable, Preetisheel shared the brief and her process of getting the look right for Big B’s Ashwatthama. She says the film’s team wanted an amalgamation of Indian mythology and futuristic design while creating Ashwatthama’s look.
“To get an opportunity to work on him (Bachchan) and to do something this iconic, is of great value. It was very interesting, something new to work on. Ashwatthama is a very interesting character (who is said to be) alive for thousands of years and how he has seen the whole planet deteriorate in front of his eyes and seen human beings, animals, trees, everything, and is waiting for his end.”
Preetisheel Singh then shared details on the brief that was given to her when she was conceptialising the look for Amitabh Bachchan’s Ashwatthama. She shared, “The main brief that was coming to us was that he is supposed to be a very very old man, and that he is somebody that has been removed from normal society and has no resources at his disposal, and everything is dark and dim around him.”
“We took inspiration from all these factors to show the ageing process, his dreadlocks and everything, understood the character brief and then we made digital drawings,” she added.
Talking about Nag Ashwin’s brief, Preetisheel Singh said, “We had received one brief from Nag Ashwin’s side also. After the character design was approved, we did the look test and it was pretty bang on in the first go, except a couple of changes. We got the look the way we had envisioned it.”
Amitabh Bachchan’s transformation as a young Ashwatthama and then playing the character’s older version has been discussed widely. On how she managed to get the look right for Bachchan in three different age groups, Preetisheel said, “We tried different looks with different intensity of ageing on them. If you see in the posters, there is a stone stuck to his forehead. For that, we used stones of different intensity to see what goes with what kind of light. It should look natural and at the same time seamlessly join to the appliance we had attached to his forehead.”
