Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor has made it to TIME Magazine’s prestigious second annual TIME 100 AI list, which celebrates the 100 most influential figures in the realm of artificial intelligence. Alongside Kapoor, the list features globally renowned names such as Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson, YouTuber Marques Brownlee, artist Lawrence Lek, comedian and AI creator King Willonius, and tech industry leaders like Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai, and Satya Nadella.
Kapoor has made it to the TIME’s AI list a year after his significant legal win in September 2023, when the Delhi High Court issued an interim order restraining 16 entities from misusing the actor’s name, voice, image, or other personal traits without permission for commercial gain. The actor was prompted to take action due to the rampant circulation of morphed videos and emojis featuring his image and iconic phrase “jhakaas,” which gained popularity after his 1985 film Yudh.
“It’s not only for me. Today, I’m there to protect myself, but when I’m not there, the family should have the right to protect my [personality] and gain from it in future,” Anil Kapoor told to Variety at that time.
“My intention is not to interfere with anyone’s freedom of expression or to penalize anyone. My intent was to seek protection of my personality rights and prevent any misuse for commercial gains, particularly in the current scenario with rapid changes in technology and tools like artificial intelligence,” Kapoor added.
Many actors have been victims of deepfake videos in the last few months. An uncanny deepfake video of Alia Bhatt and Rashmika Mandanna went viral. AI-generated videos of Aamir Khan and Ranveer Singh also grabbed eyeballs during this year’s election. In the videos, they appeared to criticise Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On the professional front, Anil Kapoor will next be seen in Hrithik Roshan’s War 2. He will also be a part of Alia Bhatt and Sharvari’s Alpha.
