Before composer AR Rahman went global, his music did. Actor Anil Kapoor says the legend that Slumdog Millionaire filmmaker Danny Boyle had heard the chartbuster soundtrack of Taal is true as he himself had revealed the same to the actor. Directed by Subhash Ghai, the 1999 film featured a memorable soundtrack by Rahman, which is remembered even today.
During a special anniversary event hosted by Radio Nasha, it was mentioned how the story travelling for years is that Danny Boyle wanted to work with Rahman after the CD of Taal soundtrack reached him. The duo’s first collaboration, Slumdog Millionaire, landed Rahman two Academy Awards– best original score and song.
“That’s what Danny told me,” Anil Kapoor said, verifying the legend. “That he had heard the music of Taal and loved it. He happened to see me in the film also, so somewhere I was there on his mind. But obviously, he wanted (initially) someone else. When he refused, he came to me!”
That “someone” Anil Kapoor was referring to was superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who was approached to star in the Oscar winning film, but he turned it down. Anil then took on the role of a game show host in the musical drama.
AR Rahman said Taal was a landmark film of his career as it opened the doors for international collaborations, recalling how even music legend Andrew Lloyd Webber had reached out to him after listening to the album.
“Taal CD was played to Andrew Lloyd Webber by Shekhar Kapur. That brought him to the theatres to watch Taal. That’s one of the reasons which made him call me to write the musical Bombay Dreams,” Rahman recalled.
Taal also starred Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Akshaye Khanna, both of whom were not present at the special event, where Subhash Ghai had revealed that Rahman was paid “minimum fee” for the film.
