Entrepreneur Anupam Mittal, who appears on the reality show Shark Tank India, opened up about his struggles with anxiety, and said that a panic attack in his 20s made him introspect about his condition. In an interview, Anupam also spoke about the steps that he has taken over the years to treat his anxiety, and said that at his worst, he felt ‘irrelevant’ and like a ‘failure’.

Anupam is among the most experienced entrepreneurs on the Shark Tank Panel, and has been a part of the show in all three seasons. Appearing on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, Anupam was asked about the biggest setbacks that he has faced in his life, and he said that when he was in his 20s, he lost all the money he’d made during the Dotcom boom. He experienced an even bigger setback in 2008, after the recession, and it took him years to rebound from it.

Opening up about his mental health during these difficult times, Anupam said, “I was working in the US, there was a Dotcom crisis, a lot was happening, and I was quite overwhelmed. That’s when I had a panic attack for the first time. If you’ve never experienced a panic attack, I pray to god that you never do. A panic attack is the scariest thing I’ve experienced. You feel like the earth will eat you whole, the walls will crush you, you have difficulty breathing. On the outside, you look calm, but inside, there’s a volcano erupting. In that moment, you are prepared to do anything. If someone were to tell you to shoot yourself, you probably might. It’s so scary.”

Anupam said that after this episode, he read up about anxiety, but the panic attacks returned in 2008. Anupam said, “You feel helpless, especially if you are a problem solver by nature. You feel irrelevant, you feel like a complete failure, you feel useless. If your baseline anxiety level is high, you are susceptible to panic attacks, it can manifest in conditions… But you won’t realise it, because you think it’s normal. All my life, my baseline anxiety has been higher than other people.”

Festive offer

Anupam said that he educated himself about the condition over time, and discovered that anxiety could also be used as a tool. “The good thing is that most creative people, lateral thinkers, people who are driven to do something big, they have a high baseline anxiety.” Anupam subsequently began seeing a therapist in 2012. He said that he still seeks therapy from time to time.
