Composer AR Rahman wouldn’t have won his two Academy Awards had he listened to his agent, who told him to “reject” filmmaker Danny Boyle’s offer to compose music for the film Slumdog Millionaire. The 2008 film landed Rahman two Academy Awards– best original score and song (Jai Ho). During a chat with Ram Sampath at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, Rahman revealed how conversations with Danny Boyle began when he was composing music for Ashutosh Gowariker’s What’s Your Raashee, headlined by Priyanka Chopra.

“I met Danny Boyle in Mumbai, and he really wanted me to do the music for the film. I called my agent, who said, ‘Reject it straight away! He is very complicated, works with multiple composers and might throw your music out.’ But I remembered Danny’s face, which was full of love and respect. I thought these two things weren’t tallying!” the composer recalled.

Rahman said that when he came on board for Slumdog Millionaire, he decided not to tell anyone about the project to save face if he’s fired. “I thought, let me not tell anyone that I am doing this movie, so even if he fires me, nobody will know! Everybody thought I was doing some documentary!” Rahman also suggested to the filmmaker that he could take a stab at composing an original track for the film’s end credits, which led to ‘Jai Ho’. The scene was earlier shot using Shankar Ehsaan Loy’s “Aaj Ki Raat” from Shah Rukh Khan’s Don.

“I would just send him ideas, all of this three months before the final mix. Then I saw Aaj Ki Raat and thought, why use some other movie’s song, I wanted to use original music, and he said if you have the time, please do it. So, everything was literally finished in three weeks. We were working from Mumbai, New Yok, London. A month passes and then my agent calls, saying, ‘What did you do? Your name is there in the film and we have not signed any contract! I believe people are freaking out about the song you did (Jai Ho), so please come to LA now and promote it.’ I did the film in secret!,” he added. Rahman worked with Boyle again on his follow-up film, 127 Hours.
