Playback singer Asha Bhosle has been part of the entertainment industry for many decades, lending her voice to hundreds of actors. She recently voiced her concern about the younger generation’s approach to marriage, criticising how quickly they resort to divorce without putting in enough effort. During an interaction with spiritual leader Ravi Shankar, she asked him why so many young couples today were choosing to end their marriages so swiftly?
Recalling her own experience, Asha mentioned that when she had issues with her husband, the most she did was go to her mother’s house with their children. “But I never divorced my husband,” she said. “However, nowadays, I hear about couples sending divorce papers every month. Why is this happening, Gurudev,” asked the nonagenarian. Ravi Shankar responded, noting that very few people today have the same strength and perseverance Asha has. “You kept singing and made everyone happy. You also had faith in god and also the strength to tolerate and deal with troubles,” he said, adding that tolerance levels have diminished significantly among people. He also pointed out that while separations are common, reunions do happen too.
“I have spent most of my years in the film industry and seen many people but, earlier, they never used to take such drastic steps like the current generation does. I feel that the love between them ends very soon and they get bored with each other fast too. Maybe that’s one of the main reasons (for the apparent increase in divorces),” she said, with Shankar agreeing. He added that, nowadays, attraction often outweighs love.
However, it is worth recalling that Asha Bhosle, at the age of 16, eloped with 31-year-old Ganpatrao Bhosle, her elder sister’s secretary, and they married against her family’s wishes. The couple had three children together and divorced in 1960. She later married music director-actor RD Burman in 1980, and they remained together until his death in 1994.

Asha also commented on women’s right to opt out of pregnancy if they don’t want to. “Nowadays, women think childbearing is a burden. It’s perhaps a reality in the lower strata of society. But even the middle and higher class. I started working as a playback singer at the age of 10. During this time, I had three children, raised them, married them off and now have grandchildren. I executed all the responsibilities successfully and single-handedly, without my husband. I did all this when I was a busy professional, working day and night. Yet, I looked after my children, their studies,” she said.
The singer further asked Ravi Shankar why people today believe they can’t juggle both family and career. The spiritual leader, who is unmarried and childless, responded by saying, “That’s because they are not familiar with your life. You have established a high standard. You are an ideal.”
