On paper, ‘Blackout’ must have sounded like a fun-filled caper, featuring a journalist, a drunk, a few mobsters, corrupt cops and politicians, two jokers, an unfaithful wife, and a good-looking woman, careering around a city (Pune, in this instance) on a night when the lights go out.
But dear readers, this one is worse than terrible. It makes you wonder if anyone involved in this enterprise knows anything from anything: a premise also needs execution.
It looks as if the casting was done after watching Vikrant Massey and Anant Vijay Joshi play well with each other in ‘12th Fail’. Here, both are given a few random scenes together, but then the whole thing is so determinedly random that it’s almost as if the writers have sworn off any logic.
Meanwhile, an array of actors, including Chhaya Kadam who is very much a flavour of the season (her other caper ‘Madgaon Express’, which wasn’t exactly scintillating either, is positively Oscar material in comparison) and Sengupta show up as and when, to do this and that. But what?
Watching this film-which-is-anything-but with increasing horror, you know exactly why Bollywood is in such doldrums. Backing an idea is never a bad thing, but did they not see the finished thing? What were they smoking?
My two hours-and-a bit are never coming back. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
