Childish Gambino has debuted the trailer for his upcoming movie “Bando Stone & The New World” during the BET Awards 2024.
A short version of the trailer ran during the commercials during the event, though the rapper posted a two-minute version on his YouTube account an hour prior. Some may have already seen the trailer in theaters, which quickly made its way onto the internet a few days ago. Gambino is also set to release an accompanying soundtrack to the movie.
In the trailer for the film, which currently doesn’t have a release date, Gambino plays Bando Stone, a famous musician who wanders through a world devoid of people before he happens upon a woman and her child. Together, they make their way through a dystopian, post-apocalyptic world filled with giant squids and menacing emu-like birds.
Glover embarked on his latest musical venture, which is tentatively the last under his Childish Gambino name, in April, when he announced in a conversation on his Gilga project that he will be dropping two new Childish Gambino albums. The first album, an updated version of his surprise release “3.15.20,” which quietly dropped in March 2020, arrived in May under its original title, “Atavista.”
He has subsequently announced dates for “The New World Tour,” a massive trek through North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, launching in August.
The rapper announced the premiere of the trailer shortly after presenting the award for album of the year to Killer Mike. While introducing the category, he gave a speech lightly indicting the BET Awards for not giving him the accolades he thinks he deserves.
“I’m really excited to be here but I wanted to get some things off my chest first,” he said. “This isn’t personal but I just feel like I should have more BET awards. I’m serious. It’s the Black Entertainment Television Awards. How much more entertaining do I have to do? Because it’s just the math of the fact. It doesn’t really make sense. I have more Grammys than Will Smith, which makes no sense, but I have the same amount of BET awards as Sam Smith. Does that make sense to you guys? Me and Sam Smith are neck and neck at the Black Entertainment Television… If I have to do ‘Baby Boy’ or something, just let me know. I’ll have Jonathan Majors put me in a headlock, shave my head, I’ll do it.”
