For those who grow up in the 1990s and early 2000s, MTV was their escape and solace and the face of change for the Indian youth who was gradually transitioning from Doordarshan to cable TV. It idolised VJs like Cyrus Broacha, Nikhil Chinapa, Malaika Arora and Maria Goretti. MTV Bakra, hosted by Broacha, became extremely popular and was considered as a pioneer show on Indian television in the candid camera format. When Cyrus Sahukar arrived in Mumbai, little did he know that he would be the victim of the prank which would eventually turn serious, resulting in actual arrest of team members. During a recent appearance on Cyrus Says, Sahukar and Broacha took a trip down memory lane, recalling how the latter played a prank on him by kidnapping him on his 18th birthday.
“It was my third day in Mumbai and my first birthday in the city and I got kidnapped” exclaimed Sahukar, adding, “The gag was that they would kidnap me but someone saw it and called the real cops and the fake kidnappers were arrested.”
Broacha, the mastermind behind the prank jokingly reminded him, “Apparently you were lying on the floor and pleading, ‘Mat maro…mat maro!’ when in reality nobody was hitting you.” Sahukar, interjected and corrected that he was indeed blindfolded and beaten up while his hands were tied up. “The cops came. I was blind-folded and my hands were tied. He warned me, ‘Agli baar aisa kiya na toh…’ I responded, ‘Kya kar rahe hain bhai saab? Dikh nahin raha hai aapko? I am the victim. What kind of blind-folded kidnaper have you met?”
Broacha revealed that while Sahukar was going though the ordeal, the team was listening to the cop abusing him. “He was like ‘What the f*ck is going on?’ My cameraman, Maggie had kept the phone on and we could hear all kinds of abuse” he added. Sahukar then reminded how serious the prank eventually got. “It was really serious yaar! The driver was pulled out from the jeep. That was my third day in Bombay and first birthday in the city and I had just turned 18,” he said. The two then discussed eating a cake baked by Maria Goretti, who is now married to Arshad Warsi.
Sahukar, who later visited Broacha’s house, recalled another prank being played on him. “I then went to your house and you were cutting the cake with ‘Cyrus’ written on it so someone told me I should also join. And you go like, ‘It’s not your birthday a**h*le, it is my birthday. You wiped off my name and pushed me away!” he shared.

In an old interview with NDTV, the then MTV spokesperson, Hemant Kenkre spoke about the fiasco and said, “Since it was Cyrus’ birthday we had decided to surprise him. We did not mean to hurt anyone.” The channel’s staffers Raju Gosavi and Madan Mangesh abducted Sahukar from a hotel, and bundled him into a waiting jeep. The duo were arrested by Mumbai police and later let off on bail.
