Deadpool and Wolverine’s box office performance proves that superhero films still have a strong fanbase and are here to stay, despite several recent stumbles. After earning Rs 66.15 crore at the India box office in its first weekend of release, early estimates by industry tracking website Sacnilk suggest that the Marvel film earned Rs 7 crore on its crucial first Monday, taking its four-day total to Rs 73.65 crore.
Deadpool and Wolverine, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the central roles, was released in cinemas on Friday, July 26. It opened at Rs 21 crore on its first day, and earned a whopping Rs 22 crore on days two and three. Deadpool and Wolverine delivered one of the top 10 biggest Hollywood openings in India, alongside the likes of Avengers: Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water, Spiderman: No Way Home, Avengers: Infinity War, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
On Monday, however, as the film saw quite a big drop in footfalls, as it was a working day. The film witnessed an overall English occupancy of 14.85 percent with most people catching the film’s night shows. In Mumbai, where there were 464 shows, the occupancy stood at 15.25 percent. In Delhi and NCR, the occupancy was 11 percent with 419 shows.
With no new Hindi film releasing in India last weekend, Deadpool and Wolverine had a good run at the box office, and has a clear path ahead of it for a few days. However, the audiences’ excitement for the film has not impacted the Hindi comedy drama Bad Newz, starring Vicky Kaushal and Triptii Dimri. The Anand Tiwari directorial saw a jump of over 50 percent over the weekend. The film’s total collections currently stand at Rs 53.15 crore India, according to Sacnilk.
The Marvel Studios production is expected to cross the Rs 100 crore mark in India in its first week. According to Deadline, the film’s international business has been phenomenal too. Deadpool and Wolverine earned around $440 million (Rs 3600+ crore) worldwide in its first weekend, which is the biggest debut for an R-rated film in history.
