A band-aid that was in a purgatory over the hardliners of GOP cleared an important detour when Democrats, rarely, took the intervening step in the hope that the Republicans might manage their own package.
Democrats threw House Speaker Mike Johnson a lifeline Friday morning in an unexpected 316-94 vote to discuss his four-piece foreign aid bill in spite of the very small number of his own Democrats who didn’t favor him in this matter.
The bills specifically, which are to give military assistance to Ukraine and Israel, are assessed to be voted in tomorrow as well as win a large bipartisan majority. After this, two lists of candidates would be combined and one final list would be made that would go to the Senate.
Discord among Republicans and agitation of their discontent with Johnson’s management noted prominently after December 10, 55 GOP members voted against him to block the bills from advancing. It was a case of ‘oh well you could have foreseen it’. There were potential losses of votes among his ranks as a result of perceived gaps in the plan such as inflation rate and number of unemployed persons.
The Best Political Cartoons on Congress
The debate on the House floor Friday morning happened when the Democrats helped the first significant obstacle for the legislation as a co-sponsors just hours. Dems in the lower chamber as uncommon action but cast votes to move the Republican legislation from committee to the floor after the blocking tactic from Rep. Ralph Norman of Texas becomes obvious. Once Democrats unanimously joined the remaining Republicans to vote ‘Yes’ on the motion for debate , the bills were able to progress on a 9-3 vote.
The win followed the week’s arguments over Johnson with his party over the content of these proposals. On Monday, he faced tough questions when the responsibility was handed over to him to pass the already ratified $95 billion aid package. The strategy was different as the four-part deal replaced the idea of it being in package; the parts being: Ukraine aid, Israel aid, Indo-Pacific aid and conservative priorities separately.
It is predicted that the proposed money bills will inject about $26 billion into the country’s coffers, $61 billion for Ukraine, and $8 billion for the Indo-Pacific. The fourth part of the agenda covers a bill which suggests about the ban of ‘TikTok’ social media platform in the United States in case its Chinese parent company does not cut all the ties while dealing with national security priorities.
As a last-minute concession, Johnson announced an additional border security bill that would move under a separate procedural rule from the foreign aid bills. The additional bill – which, even if approved, stands no chance in the Senate – would contain the “core components” of a House-passed bill that would bolster security at the southern border.
The news was almost immediately met with sharp criticism, with many dismissing it as weak and an attempt to pacify one faction of his party. With more party members vowing to vote against him, Johnson was forced to accept help from across the aisle to save himself.
But Friday’s bipartisan help will almost certainly alter – or end – Johnson’s leadership.
During Friday Gosar realized to be the third Republican who took part in motion to force out Johnson, based on his press release as a motive for the issue was border security ones.
“Declaring that America has been welcoming around 11 million illegal immigrants and not securing the border and contradicting the previous promises in the light of allocation another $61 billion to fight the war in Ukraine, Gosar disclosed that the U.S. House Representatives under the direction of the Speaker was about facing a future of never-ending senseless war in Ukraine.”
The quick change of tune is in the wake of Republican Representative Thomas Massie from Kentucky who signed the motion coming from Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia.
Nevertheless, the acts haven’t changed that much as Gosar was seen sitting beside Greene on the floor of the House during the Friday’s vote. However, this switch could encourage others like Republican Representative Eli Crane from Texas who have expressed interests into backing the impeachment motion on Donald Trump.
Greene has not revealed when she intends to schedule a vote on her resolution. However, several Republicans anticipate that she is searching for broad support before acting. Once the House adjourned, the motion could be tabled, on, maybe, Saturday, at the earliest.
If it is affirmative, then it will have the two legislative days to take a decision.
A floor motion to impeach Johnson would need a simple majority of the votes, thus the responsibility of the decision to save or sink him will be in the power of the democratic caucus. Some Democrats were supporting Johnson’s stance only after the passage of the Ukraine assistance would receive assistance from their colleagues as well. And the factors are favoring the speaker right now. However, if he manages to keep the chair, his majority leadership within the house and the party will continue as distractions and chaotic situations.
