Deven Bhojani is a name that instantly brings back memories of his iconic roles in cinema and television. We remember him as the lovable and quirky friend of Aamir Khan, Ghansu, in the cult classic Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992), and later, as the hilarious Dushyant in the hit TV series Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and Gattu in Baa Bahoo Aur Baby. However, Deven’s talent extends far beyond his comedic persona. With the rise of OTT platforms, he’s now shedding his typecast image and exploring new horizons, showcasing his versatility as an actor.

“I’m extremely happy because I have always believed that I was a versatile actor, but I was waiting for the right opportunity,” Deven tells indianexpress.com, referring to his role in the critically acclaimed web series Taaza Khabar, which is now in its second season. The show’s success has been a game-changer for Deven, allowing him to showcase his range as an actor.

“Taaza Khabar Season 1 made me extremely happy because it was a totally different kind of character. I had never played someone who is so emotional, righteous, someone with a beard and red hair, owning a bakery and selling anda-pav (eggs and bread). There are so many layers to this character,” he elaborates.

Deven Bhojani’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Typecasting has been a persistent issue, with many assuming he’s only suited for comedic roles. “Yes, it becomes easier for makers, channels, and platforms to typecast an actor,” Deven acknowledges. “If they like somebody doing something, they think of a certain actor for those roles.” However, he’s determined to break free from these expectations.

With the rise of OTT platforms, Deven has finally found the perfect opportunity to showcase his versatility. Taaza Khabar and his recent Gujarati film Udan Chhoo have allowed him to tap into his dramatic and romantic sides.

“Udan Chhoo is a middle-age love story, and I’m playing a romantic lead. It’s doing incredibly well, and people are still flocking to theatres after three weeks,” Deven beams with pride. “I’m extremely happy thinking, ‘yeh bhi main kar let hoon yaar! (I can do this too!)’”

Festive offer

Deven Bhojani’s passion for exploration and learning is evident in his words. “I like to explore myself as an actor; I still don’t know what all I’m capable of, so I’ll keep exploring and learning. When I learn something, it ends up being entertaining for people, so I’m looking forward to doing even more work.”

The overwhelming compliments he’s received for his recent performances have only fueled his creative fire.

Deven says he is “pushing boundaries” with his character in the second season of Taaza Khabar. “I’m excited to see where this journey takes me,” the actor concludes.

Taaza Khabar Season 2 is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
