Stree 2 actor Abhishek Banerjee recently recalled the phase of his life when he had just started his career as a casting director, and was yet to make a mark as an actor. In a recent interview, while promoting his film Vedaa, which stars John Abraham and Sharvari in the lead roles, Abhishek remembered the time he was fired from Hrithik Roshan’s Agneepath (2012), a film backed by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions.
Talking to Siddharth Kanan, Abhishek revealed that he was fired as a casting director from Agneepath. He shared, “We were fired from Agneepath. We were casting for Agneepath, it was then taken over by Jogi (Mallang) bhai. Why were we removed? Because Karan sir didn’t like our casting.” The film was produced by Karan Johar and directed by Karan Malhotra, and Abhishek did not specify which Karan he was referring to in this conversation.
“We were casting Anurag Kashyap-type actors. He didn’t like it and said, ‘nikal jaao humaari film se‘ (get out of our film). We thought our career was barbaad, khatam (our career was over) because we were thrown out of Dharma (Productions). We thought we were done, but thankfully, we survived,” he added.
Abhishek started his career as a casting director in 2010 and has done casting for films like Vidya Balan’s The Dirty Picture and Rani Mukerjee’s No One Killed Jessica, in which he also acted. Some of his last noteworthy projects as a casting director are Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar’s The Sky is Pink and web-series Paatal Lok. He is the co-founder of his casting company Casting Bay.
