Distressing Deadpool and Wolverine theory says X-Men have been absent from MCU because Logan killed them all | Hollywood News

Ahead of Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel fans are eager to know how characters from the now-defunct X-Men universe are entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The crossover was facilitated by Disney’s takeover of 20th Century Fox and its assets a couple of years ago. Fox distributed all the X-Men movies, including the Deadpool hits, while Disney has produced every MCU movie after 2012’s The Avengers.

While the introduction of the TVA in the show Loki certainly opened up opportunities to introduce the X-Men and other mutants to the MCU, as did the exploration of the multiverse in movies such as Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it’s still unclear how director Shawn Levy and his team of writers, including Ryan Reynolds, have decided to pull off this grand narrative experiment.

A Reddit user who goes by yoyofro25 shared his theory as to how this could happen in the movie, and presented a rather distressing scenario. The theory tries to explain not only how the crossover can happen, but also why the X-Men haven’t been seen in this universe so far. The film’s trailer revealed that Wolverine had let his world down prior to the events of the movie. The theory says that Logan was coerced into killing all the X-Men by the villainous Cassandra Nova, which is why he seems to be drinking his sorrows away in bars.

The fan wrote, “As we know, the TVA takes in Deadpool, and then Wolverine becomes a part of this movie. Well I think that for whatever reason the TVA needs Deadpool to help ‘recruit’ this Wolverine variant, and this variant just so happens to be the MCU’s Wolverine. When we see Deadpool first meet Wolverine in the bar, Wolverine seems like he doesn’t recognize/know who Deadpool is. This seems like its their first time meeting IN the movie. Perhaps this could also explain why we haven’t seen or heard of any of the classic/more popular X-Men and mutants in the MCU. Maybe this Wolverine killed off the MCU’s X-Men years ago and spent the rest of his life doing nothing but getting drunk and living in isolation, until of course, Deadpool comes over from his own universe, to meet this Wolverine in the MCU. As for Cassandra Nova, this probably could also be an MCU variant, who was banished to the VOID after she made Wolverine kill off his fellow X-Men.”

Others seemed to appreciate this theory. “I actually like this, I hope it’s true,” one person wrote. Another person commented, “I believe your theory is pretty much correct, except that the Wolverine we see is a variant from another universe, probably the Old Man Logan world. Deadpool probably convinces him to join him by telling him that he will have the chance to save another world/dimension/X-Men-Mutants group and redeem himself. This Logan doesn’t recognize Deadpool because his world doesn’t have a Wade Wilson Deadpool.”

Deadpool & Wolverine is said to be ushering in a new era for the MCU, after a largely disappointing last few years that saw plans for the future being derailed by a string of box office under-performers and off-screen issues related to actor Jonathan Majors. The MCU will continue to expand with the upcoming Fantastic Four movie, which will introduce Marvel’s third major superhero team to the franchise.
