Filmmaker-choreographer Farah Khan recalled the difficulties that she experienced after her father lost all his money. Farah’s father was the stuntman-turned-producer Kamran Khan, and her mother was Menaka Irani, the sister of former child actors Daisy Irani and Honey Irani. Through her mother, she is related to filmmakers Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar, the children of veteran writer Javed Akhtar. In an interview, she said that she and her brother Sajid Khan were looked at as the ‘poor cousins’, because their father wasn’t successful.

He took to drink after losing his money, and died when Farah was just 18. In an interview with Radio Nasha, when she was asked about her film background, she said, “Yes, I belonged to a filmy family, but by the time I turned five, we were the poor cousins. We’d lost all our money, dad’s film had flopped. We had a riches to rags story. So, they (rest of the family) were all rocking, and we were the charity cases. Sajid and me and our mother were the charity cases. But, of course, they were very nice to us. They let us stay in their house.”

Farah recalled that the highlight of her life back then was getting access to early test screenings of unreleased films. She said that she saw a rough cut of Zanjeer, without a background score. “After that, we started getting tickets to go and see the movies. I remember 10 of us squeezing into one car to go and watch Sholay,” she said.

In a recent chat with Maniesh Paul, Farah remembered that their father had only change in his pocket when he died. “The night before, he had played taash (cards) and the only money he had in his pocket was the Rs 30 he had won from those games. Sajid also shared this story on Bigg Boss, explaining how we had to gather funds from various sources to arrange for our father’s funeral,” she recalled. Previously, in an appearance on Bigg Boss, Sajid Khan had said that they didn’t even have the money to pay for their father’s funeral, and that Javed Akhtar’s old screenwriting partner, Salim Khan, eventually helped them out.

Festive offer

In a recent interview on the Time Out with Ankit YouTube channel, Sajid had recalled that their father would make ‘B-grade films’, but when he was born, he decided to upgrade. “He decided to make an A-grade big film with Sanjeev Kumar. That film never got made. Aadhi picture karke Sanjeev Kumar bhaag gaya. My father lost all his money. Then my father became an alcoholic and my parents got divorced,” he said. Farah is now one of the foremost Bollywood choreographers and directors, and has made blockbusters such as Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om.
