Farhan Akhtar, who is married to Shibani Dandekar, was previously married to Adhuna Bhabani for 16 years. In a recent interview, Farhan opened up about how his two daughters, Shakya and Akira, dealt with his divorce and shared that he felt like they became “collateral damage” in this situation. Farhan also said that he completely understands if there is some degree of anger or resentment within his daughters over their parents’ relationship collapsing.

In a chat with Rhea Chakraborty on her YouTube channel, Farhan was asked about the impact of his divorce on his children and he shared, “Obviously, it couldn’t have been easy because, eventually, at the end of the day, the relationship that they think in their mind is solid and perfect, is being fractured. So there will be some degree of anger, even now I would imagine… latent…. within them. Some sadness. Some, maybe, resentment you know, of why… And that is something that I guess with time and with conversations, there will be some kind of solace understanding that one can reach.”

Farhan then said that he felt “tremendously guilty towards them” when he and Adhuna divorced. He shared, “I did feel tremendously guilty towards them, when that happened… when Adhuna and I divorced because it had nothing to do with them. So they are like kind of collateral damage in some kind of way for them emotionally.”

In an earlier chat with Faye D’Souza, Farhan said that before deciding to separate from Adhuna, he was reminded of his own parents’ separatioin. Farhan’s parents Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani divorced when he was a child. “I felt that it came to a place that if Adhuna and myself spoke to them openly and honestly, and explained to them why we are taking this kind of step, that it doesn’t have anything to do with them. It’s not because of them, it’s not because of anything they did, they said, or because they are here,” he said, and added, “It’s something that I am going to have to live with for the rest of my life. It’s never going to entirely go away… the thinking about, ‘Did they deserve this?’ It’s going to keep coming up. That’s something I guess I’ll just have to live with. The fact that it had happened to me as a kid played a huge role in how I feel about it now.”
