Gladiator 2 new trailer: A new promo video for director Ridley Scott’s much-anticipated epic historical action film Gladiator 2 promises that the movie will be grander, bloodier and more intense than its blockbuster prequel. The 146-second trailer opens with a long shot of the sea beneath dark clouds. “It is an art, choosing gladiators (in ancient Rome, men who fought other men or animals, usually until one of them died, for public entertainment),” one character states, as we see a wounded Lucius Verus (Paul Mescal) in the hold of a ship. “They are usually, prisoners of war,” Macrinus (Denzel Washington) declares with authority. The sequel follows Lucius as a young adult living in the northern African region of Numidia, where his mother sent him as a child.

However, the atmosphere shifts dramatically as we see Rome burning with Marcus Acacius’ (Pedro Pascal) arrival. But Verus is not ready to give up just yet; following Macrinus’s instructions, he learns to channel his rage, carving his path to greatness. Soon, it is revealed that Verus is the son of Maximus Decimus Meridius (the character played by Russell Crowe in the 2000 film Gladiator), setting the stage for the most epic battle of the year. “Take your father’s strength. His name was Maximus. And I see him in you,” Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) tells her son Verus.

The new trailer is packed with exhilarating moments, offering glimpses of Gladiator 2’s elaborate and illustrious world, which is said to unfold in front of the audience backed by the technical brilliance characteristic of Ridley Scott’s films. “After his home is conquered by the tyrannical emperors who now lead Rome, Lucius is forced to enter the Colosseum and must look to his past to find strength to return the glory of Rome to its people,” the synopsis on the official IMDb page for Gladiator 2 states.

Besides Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington and Connie Nielsen, the movie also stars Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger in key roles. With cinematography by John Mathieson, editing by Claire Simpson and Sam Restivo and music by Harry Gregson-Williams and Ariyan Mehedi, Gladiator 2 will hit theatres on November 15, 2024.
