The Colosseum is alive, and this time it is Paul Mescal battling against Pedro Pascal in the ring. Gladiator 2 unveiled its trailer on Tuesday as they shared the sneak peek of Ridley Scott’s action-packed film which is the sequel to the epic 2000 film Gladiator. It also stars Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, and Denzel Washington in pivotal roles.
The trailer begins with Lucius (Mescal), grandson of the former Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (played by Joaquin Phoenix). Lucius, portrayed as a child in the original Gladiator, remembers how the slave Maximus (played by Russell Crowe) took revenge on Emperor Marcus. In the sequel, Lucius is seen living in the northern African region of Numidia, sent there by his mother to keep him out of the reach of the Roman Empire. Circumstances bring him back to Rome, but this time as a gladiator.
He reunites with his mother, who gives him the ring of Maximus. Maximus’ legacy lives on as Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) appears on screen. Marcus is a Roman general who trained under Maximus. Later, Lucius and Marcus end up in the pit and battle it out at the Colosseum. Denzel Washington plays the role of a wealthy powerbroker in the film and is the most impressive part of the trailer.
In the original film, Maximus is a Roman general betrayed by Commodus and reduced to slavery, ultimately fighting as a gladiator to avenge his family. Maximus also saves the lives of Lucius and Lucilla. Released in 2000, Gladiator fetched 11 Oscar nominations and won the Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Costume Design, Best Sound and Best Visual Effects awards.
Gladiator 2 will release in theatres on November 15.
