Govinda’s wife, Sunita Ahuja, recently opened up about their vast cultural differences. She said in an interview that as some brought up in the posh Mumbai suburb of Bandra, she looked down on Govinda, who grew up in Virar. Theirs was an arranged-love marriage, they said in an appearance on the chat show Rendezvous with Simi Garewal two decades ago. It was during this chat that Sunita described how they overcame their differences, while Govinda admitted that her progressive dressing sense made him judge her character.
Sunita said that her elder sister is married to Govinda’s uncle, and that she would visit their house often because Govinda was camping out there while struggling to make it as an actor. Govinda recalled, “Main itna desi tha, aur mujhe itna desipana pasand tha, ke mujhe koi bhi tez aadmi nazar aaye, toh main aisa ho jaata tha… (I was a very simple person, I would become very uncomfortable around smart alecks).”
When Simi asked if he was describing Sunita as ‘tez’, Govinda said, “Badi tez lagti thi mujhe, haath mein kutta, skirt pehne, chewing gum khaate… Seedhe baat nahi karti, chewing gum kha ke baat karti hai. Bade style mein bulati thi mujhe ‘Chi Chi’. Main kehta tha, ‘Tum kutte ko aise style se bulati ho? Thoda lehja theek karo, aur thodi zindagi bhi theek karo apni (I used to find her very forward. She would walk around in short skirts, holding her dog, chewing gum. I would tell her to get her life in order and mind her manners).” Govinda said this while gesturing up and down at an imaginary Sunita.
She said that they were complete opposites of each other, and described Govinda as a ‘pure villager’. “I never thought I’d get married to him,” she said. In a recent appearance on the Time Out with Ankit YouTube channel, Sunita spoke about Govinda’s reaction to her clothes and general attitude. She said that after they tied the knot, she went from ‘wearing mini skirts to sarees’. “I would tell him, ‘I’m from Bandra, you’re from Virar, boss’. And he’d say, ‘No, my mother won’t like it’,” she recalled.
Govinda and Sunita tied the knot in 1987, but he kept the marriage a secret for the first year, fearing that his career would be affected. They have two children, daughter Tina and son Yashvardhan.
