‘Govinda’s superstition and gullibility led to his downfall’; Pahlaj Nihalani recalls actor’s on-set fears: ‘Kader Khan will drown, chandelier will fall’ | Bollywood News

Film producer Pahlaj Nihalani, who had a successful creative run with actor Govinda in the 1990s, opened up about never having developed a friendship with him. He said that Govinda was always unpredictable, and prone to making bad professional decisions. He said that over the years, Govinda also became deeply superstitious, as his tardiness became more pronounced. All together, there was a great risk involved in working with him, even when he was at his peak, Pahlaj Nihalani said.

Appearing on the Friday Talkies YouTube channel, the producer said that Govinda’s acting capabilities remain unmatched, as he praised his devotion to his family, and his pure heart. But he also pointed out the reasons he feels led to his career downfall. “He gradually became more and more superstitious. He was always a little gullible. He would say that the chandelier is about to fall on set, and ask everyone to move aside. Then he would predict that Kader Khan was going to drown. He would instruct people to change their clothes based on his superstitions. He would refuse to do certain things on certain days. All of this, combined with his tardiness and gullibility, led to his downfall,” Nihalani said.

He recalled that when he first met Govinda, he wasn’t impressed by his looks. The next day, the actor came by with a showreel, and claimed to be an excellent dancer as well. “We never became friends,” Nihalani said, adding, “We had a connection, but there was always an uncertainty working with him. He would sign dozens of B-grade and C-grade movies without a second thought. He’d be working on five or six movies at the same time, nobody would know where he is. He’d be late constantly. He would lie. He said that he was doing it for the money, and I told him that this is a dangerous way of thinking.”

Stressing that they were never friends again, Nihalani said that Govinda would always come knocking at his door when he was going through a difficult phase in his career, not when he was at the top of his game. “This industry operates on trust. When the trust breaks… A relationship between an actor and a producer will only last if there’s trust. He didn’t maintain relationships with anybody,” the producer said. Incidentally, they worked together again in 2019, on the film Rangeela Raja. Govinda has since implied many times that there is a Bollywood conspiracy afoot to keep him down.
