Govinda and his wife, Sunita Ahuja, have been married for nearly four decades. They’ve spoken about their relationship on several occasions, recalling that it began when Govinda was still struggling to leave his mark in the film industry. He’d go on to become one of Bollywood’s top actors in the 90s, with a string of blockbusters with director David Dhawan. In an appearance on Simi Garewal’s talk show two decades ago, Govinda and his wife spoke about how their relationship began, and described it as a half arranged marriage, and half love marriage.
In the interview, Sunita also spoke about Govinda’s mother, who had a huge impact on his life and career. She said that she was handpicked as a partner for Govinda by his mother, whose brother was married to Sunita’s sister. She also revealed how obedient Govinda was as a son, and recalled a humorous story about the first time that they went out for a drink together.
Asked if Govinda is a romantic, Sunita said, “Sometimes. We had champagne for the first time at the Taj. It was my birthday. We wanted to have a candlelight dinner. We didn’t tell my mother-in-law…” Govinda chimed in, “I got so emotional, seeing everyone there, the stewards. I gave them money, and we danced.” Sunita continued, “We said, ‘Let’s have champagne today’. So, we ordered for one.”
This was when Govinda said that he ‘rang mummy’. “I asked her, ‘Can I drink’, and she said, ‘So you want to drink? These are bad habits, but if you want to enjoy yourself, go ahead’.” Govinda said that he returned to the table to a sarcastic Sunita. “She had a look on her face, as if she was asking, ‘So, you got permission?’” Sunita joked, “Then we danced, and the hangover lasted one week.”
Govinda used to live at his uncle’s house when he was struggling to make a mark, and that’s where he’d meet Sunita. They hit it off, despite Sunita’s lack of faith in the relationship because of their cultural differences. She said in a recent interview on the Time Out with Ankit YouTube channel that she looked down on him because he came from the middle-class suburb of Virar, and she was raised in the posh locality of Bandra. In recent years, Govinda has been going through a rather rough patch; his last film was released in 2019.
