Actor Jason Shah recently opened up about his experience working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali on the filmmaker’s debut streaming series, the period drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. Jason also reflected on the gruesome rape scene featuring him, Manisha Koirala and a few other men. He also said that he didn’t feel that his character Alastair Cartwright was queer.
In an interview with ETimes, Jason discussed the rape scene, saying he didn’t find it exceptionally draining or emotional. He attributed this to his perception that he wasn’t the one raping Koirala’s character Mallikajaan, but rather letting his men do it. “I didn’t find it too emotional for me because, at that moment, I felt like I wasn’t raping her, I felt I was letting my guys do it.” He further mentioned that this approach helped him.
Jason’s Cartwright was also featured in a racy scene with actor Indresh Malik’s character Ustaadji. Discussing this scene, Jason emphasised that he was confident it would be handled tastefully and wouldn’t be done in a vulgar manner. He explained that he didn’t view Cartwright as queer, but rather as a guy who would go to any lengths to get the job done. He added that the scene turned out well and mentioned that the chemistry between him and Indresh was evident.
The actor said that SLB is a “perfectionist.” Jason also provided an example of how Bhansali disagreed with his suggestion to make his character a bit kinder. He explained that when he proposed showing his character liking these women by interacting with them in a more charming and affectionate manner, Bhansali firmly rejected the idea. Heeramandi is currently streaming on Netflix. The show also stars Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari and Sanjeeda Sheikh among others.
