One of the prominent figures in Bollywood accused by multiple women of sexual assault and/or harassment, actor Alok Nath was also booked under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) following a complaint filed by a veteran TV writer-producer. Although Nath denied these accusations, veteran actor Himani Shivpuri, who worked with him in many films, recently shared that he often exhibited erratic behaviour when drunk. She also recalled an incident of misbehaviour on his part during her early days at the National School of Drama (NSD).

During a conversation with Siddharth Kanan, Shivpuri stated that Nath becomes a completely different person when drunk, saying, “I have done a lot of work with him in the past and the thing with him is that when he is not drinking, then he is sanskari. His personality was like that of Jekyll and Hyde,” she said. The actor further recalled the time when they were travelling to an award show abroad with Nath’s wife, and he was asked to leave the plane due to his drunken behaviour.

Regarding her own experience, Shivpuri said, “Apart from one incident in NSD, I have never faced any problem with him. But, I would hear from people that he was a different person after a few drinks.”

Himani Shivpuri and Alok Nath have worked together in movies such as Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001), Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999), Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994) and Pardes (1997).

In 2018, Nath — widely recognised for his ‘sanskaari’ on-screen image — was accused by a veteran TV writer-producer of sexually assaulting her nearly two decades prior. “I have waited for this moment to come for 19 years,” the woman wrote in a Facebook post, referring to the “predator in question” as “the actor par excellence who is known as the most ‘sanskaari’ (cultured) person in the film and television industry”.

Festive offer

“He was an alcoholic, shameless and obnoxious but he was also the television star of that decade, so not only was he forgiven for all his bad behaviour, many of the guys would also egg him on to be his worst,” she added, mentioning that he had also harassed the show’s lead female actor who was not interested in him.
