Actor Imran Khan said that his time away from the public eye invited a tremendous amount of speculation that “disturbed” members of his family, especially his mother. The actor moved away from the industry after his film Katti Batti, co-starring Kangana Ranaut, flopped in 2015. During his sabbatical, Imran said there were things written about him in the news that he didn’t take notice of. But his family would often read what was speculated about him, and his health, and be really worried for him.
“Even if you are not on social media, it still reaches you because of newspapers. I would get newspapers in the house. My mom, aunts and that generation of people who still get newspapers at home, they would see (what’s written about me) and get disturbed by it. They would say, ‘See what they are saying about you? They have posted this photo where you look like this, they are saying you are taking drugs. Kya ho raha hai?’ It is disturbing,” he told India Today.
The actor said he had to sit down and have a “complicated” talk about the rumours with his parents, to make them understand that what was written about him–without any sensitivity–was not true. “It is complicated then to have that conversation with your parents, family and tell them I can’t manage what those people say or do. People say these things without any consideration or thought of where it lands.”
When asked if he ever felt the need to release a statement and take the narrative in his own hands, Imran said he was never interested in clearing the air. “Just because those people say it, doesn’t make it real. The way I engaged with it was, ‘You guys are saying something about me, you don’t know the truth. You are saying it to people, who also don’t know and I don’t care enough to correct you or to talk to you. I don’t know who any of you are.’”
Previously, in an interview with Film Companion, Imran Khan had said that he had a “mental health scare” in around 2016-2017, where he realsied he wasn’t “healthy, strong or capable.” This is when he started prioritising his wellbeing.
“In those years, I was just not capable of doing these things. I was barely capable of functioning. When you are tackling deep and severe depression, just getting up in the morning and brushing your teeth and taking a shower is a monumental task,” he said, and mentioned that making it to his regular therapy appointments was a task in itself,” he had said.
In 2019, Imran Khan also parted ways with Avantika Malik, his longtime sweetheart to whom he got married in 2011. Imran is currently dating actor-production designer Lekha Washington. On the work front, he is in talks with multiple filmmakers to decide his comeback project.
