Although Tamasha (2015) received mixed reviews at the time of its release and was dismissed by many, it has gradually built a cult following, with numerous scenes from the movie frequently doing the rounds on social media as reels these days. The film also marked a significant point in the careers of those involved, particularly director Imtiaz Ali and actors Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Piyush Mishra, with all of them gaining considerable recognition for their works.

Recently, Piyush took a trip down memory lane and recalled filming the acclaimed lengthy scene featuring a conversation between his character and Ranbir’s towards the movie’s end, revealing that they shot it 16 times. The actor also emphasised that he didn’t improvise anything in that emotionally charged scene and followed the writer-director’s instructions precisely. “We performed it exactly how Imtiaz had written it (in the script). In fact, we did it 16 times. Those weren’t retakes though. That’s just Imtiaz Ali’s strange process. He doesn’t go for retakes,” Mishra said during a chat with Bollywood Hungama.

“(When shooting) Imtiaz will ask you to keep doing it and say that he will take whichever he likes. He trusted me and Ranbir and our rapport was also very good. We kept doing it and he finally included in the film the one he liked the most. But that speech was very long and detailed. It took us a lot of effort to do it exactly that way. Yet, it was great fun. It’s always fun working with Imtiaz Ali,” he added.

Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under the banner of Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, Tamasha’s music was composed by AR Rahman. In her review of the movie, The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta wrote, “Deepika Padukone is luminous, and she is much more sure-footed in her part. Even though Ranbir Kapoor gets more space, Tara is drawn with welcome depth.” Besides Tamasha, Piyush Mishra collaborated with Imtiaz Ali and Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar (2011) as well. He was last seen in director Shankar’s Indian 2, starring Kamal Haasan in the lead role.
