Actor Sonam Kapoor‘s Mumbai home is more than just a residence; it’s a personal ode to India’s rich heritage and her own evolving journey. The Saawariya actor recently gave a sneak peek of her opulent Mumbai residence, a stunning fusion of classic elegance and contemporary flair. Known for her impeccable taste, Sonam personally designed the interior design of her home, shared with her husband Anand Ahuja and son Vayu.

In a candid conversation with Architectural Digest, Sonam revealed her home is a culmination of treasures and souvenirs gathered during her extensive travels across India. “This house marks a new chapter for me, as a woman, a collector — and a mother,” she expressed, adding, “I had been longing for a base in which to curate all the things I have collected while filming in far-flung parts of India over the years.” Her husband, Anand, was instrumental in bringing this vision to life, encouraging her to establish a base closer to family.

Initially an investment property, the apartment’s soaring ceilings and expansive layout captivated Sonam Kapoor. She envisioned transforming this blank canvas into a breathtaking spectacle. The result is a maximalist masterpiece that exudes warmth and character.

Shared some stunning pictures, in a joint post with the magazine, she wrote, “Having spent much of the lockdown era in a stucco building in Notting Hill it was a deep-breath moment to decide to spend more time in the city of my birth,” explaining her decision to design the house.

Festive offer

“If I love something, nothing will stop me from getting it home. It was Anand who pushed for it — he argues that with a baby looming, we should be closer to the family. I had bought this modern, and slightly soulless, apartment as an investment. But, as I spent more time in it, the double-height ceilings and the sweep of the lateral space began to seduce me. I quietly relished the idea of creating a spectacle from sheer nothingness,” she narrated.

Sonam Kapoor offered fans a glimpse into her living and bedroom havens on Instagram. She described her living room as the heart of her home, where friends gather and memories are made. Overwhelmed by the modern architecture, she sought to infuse the space with nostalgia, resulting in a layered, hand-painted sanctuary. “Welcome to my living room where I do all the entertaining things like hanging out and where all my friends come. This is one of my favourite rooms where I ever lived, because all my fantasies come to life. The reason I went so Indian and maximalist, I just wanted a lot of layers because this is a very new building. I just got really overwhelmed by coming to this very modern building. I was like, ‘How do I make it nostalgic to who I am,’ and I just went mad. Every wall over here is hand-painted.”

Sonam’s flair for design is undeniably inherited. Her ‘nani’ (maternal grandmother) ignited the spark. “She was a tiny woman but so full of vim. She was obsessed with fragrance, music, art, and carpets. Growing up in a post-Partition Sindhi family, she possessed an innate refinement in her tastes. It is hard to understate her influence on me. Her influence on me is immeasurable.”

The baton was then passed to Sonam’s aunt, renowned interior designer Kavita Singh. Together, they have woven a tapestry of tradition and modernity within the walls of her house. In her post, Sonam credits Singh and Jaipur-based fresco artist Vikas Soni for bringing her vision to life. Inspired by Cher’s bedroom feature in Architectural Digest, she incorporated a majestic jharokha as the focal point of her own bedroom, concealing the television for an uninterrupted aesthetic.
