Independent MP Zali Steggall has raised the issue of an increase in domestic violence at the time of State of Origin games, citing a link with alcohol and gambling, and asked Anthony Albanese what the government is doing to keep women safer. The prime minister responded: ‘There is nothing wrong with having a beer, there is something wrong with excessive consumption leading to the violence that does tragically occur too much … This is something that the whole of society has to confront, and men in particular have to take responsibility … for changing attitudes, changing culture, because it demeans everyone, it demeans women”
