Jackie Shroff, known for being one of the most versatile veteran actors in the Hindi film industry, had to work hard and overcome significant struggles to reach the top. In a recent interview, the Hero actor opened up about his humble beginnings, sharing memories of his life in Mumbai’s Teen Batti chawl. He recalled standing in line with other residents each morning to use the communal lavatory and living in a small, single room with his parents.

Talking to Ranveer Allahbadia, Jackie recalled, “I remember those years when I would stand outside chawl’s bathroom with my mug. There were seven small building and we had three bathrooms for all the people of those buildings. There would be a line outside the toilet every morning because people would be in a hurry to go work. This memory is still fresh in my mind. Sometimes I still see myself standing in that line.”

Jackie also reflected on how these experiences have stayed with him, particularly the simple act of sitting on the floor while his mother cooked dinner. “I used to sit on the floor and eat, which is the best way to eat I think. My mother would cook and I would sit on the ground and eat. Those memories haven’t left my mind,” he said.

An old video of Jackie visiting the Teen Batti chawl recently resurfaced on the internet, capturing the actor’s emotional return to his roots. During the interview, when Jackie was shown this video and his old room, he vividly recalled the harsh living conditions. He said, “I used to sleep on the floor of this room. I saw a snake in the corner of that room,. Once a rat bit me and my mom. This I am talking about mid 60s.”

After doing small roles, Jackie eventually got his big break in Subhash Ghai’s Hero (1983), which catapulted him to overnight stardom. He went on to establish himself as a prominent figure in the industry with films like Teri Meherbaniyan (1985), Karma (1986), Jawab Hum Denge (1987), Ram Lakhan (1989), and Parinda (1989).
