Actor Janhvi Kapoor is the latest Bollywood celebrity to comment on the rising entourage cost of Bollywood films, which are witnessing a spike in budgets due to the unregulated overhead expenses. After consecutive failures of big-ticket films in the recent past, like Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan and Akshay Kumar-Tiger Shroff fronted Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, the Hindi film industry is seeing a renewed spotlight on the exorbitant fees actors are charging and, especially, the entourage cost, which burden a production.
As Janhvi Kapoor sat down with Indianexpress.com to promote her next film Mr & Mrs Mahi, the actor was asked her take on the rising overhead costs, especially since she is a producer’s daughter.
“I do think about the costs,” Janhvi, daughter of producer Boney Kapoor said as she reflected on the trend. “But I’m of the belief that everyone on a film set is an artiste. I know I’m very protective of my team and I’d like to protect their rights. Being a producer’s daughter, however, I also know the kind of burden and pressure all these monetary things can put on a producer. It’s important to have an open dialogue with your makers.”
An Indianexpress.com report had shed light on the menace of entourage cost, which are inflating budgets and risking a film’s recovery. The price breakup for the entourage of a star varies, but on average, a spot boy would charge Rs 25,000 per day, personal security would charge Rs 15,000 per head per day and a stylist can charge up to Rs 1 lakhs. The overhead cost of a star amounts to Rs 20-22 lakhs per day, which for a film shot over 70 days, would be additional cost of Rs 15-20 cr.
Janhvi said a good production team will always take care of an actor’s team if the film demands that kind of entourage. The actor added that not everyone, who is a part of a star’s crew, “works for money”.
“That if this is not the film where you can have all of this then you can make that adjustment and if this is the film where your team can get what you want then you give them that. I’m sure if you are working with people who care about the craft as much as you do… Sab log yaha sirf paiso ke liye kaam nahi kar rahe, kaam ke liye bhi kaam kar rahe hai. So I think it is easy to come to an understanding about these things,” she added.
Previously filmmaker Farah Khan and actor Kriti Sanon had also spoken about the rising entourage cost. Farah, who had made blockbusters with Shah Rukh Khan like Om Shanti Om and Main Hoon Na, had said in an interview with Twin Encounter that change she would like to bring about is the entourage cost, which has become “too much.”
“An actress comes with nine people, an actor comes with eight people. That is a waste of resources. That cost is nowhere to be seen in the film! That needs to be controlled a bit. Woh producers pe bohot bhaari padta hai,” Farah Khan had said.
