Writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar, in a recent conversation, said that the reason why he is an atheist is that he has the ability to think. Javed was a guest at the latest session of Expresso, conducted on Thursday in Mumbai. When asked about how he “escaped religious indoctrination,” Javed said that as thinking individuals, “we are rational, logical but a part of our brain is damaged in a childhood when we had no choice.”
He then spoke about the time when people who went against societal norms were punished for their scientific thinking, and quickly added that “the 20th and 21st century is the time of schizophrenia, people have split personalities.”
Elaborating on his thoughts, Javed Akhtar said that when a scientist from ISRO sends a rocket to moon, they offer their prayers at a temple, thus questioning this clash of scientific thinking and blind faith. “A man in India from ISRO, who can send a rocket to the precise place of moon… But moon had chandralok, devi-devtas used to live there, you are sending a rocket there, and the moment you send it, you go out and you go to the temple. This is schizophrenia. It has happened for the first time in human history where your own knowledge and information, which you own, and your faith are not on the same page,” he said.
Javed Akhtar then proceeded to say that all religions belong in the “dark ages” and added, “All these religions, all the religions without exception, belong to the dark ages. Their roots are in the dark ages. You bring the dark age with you. Your umbilical cord has not been cut from the dark ages.”
Javed Akhtar was present at the event with his daughter, filmmaker Zoya Akhtar.
