Jigra box office collection day 1 early report: Alia Bhatt-starrer struggles to keep up with Vettaiyan, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video | Bollywood News

Jigra box office collection day 1 early report: One of the most anticipated Bollywood movies of the year, director Vasan Bala’s action thriller Jigra, starring Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina in the lead roles, hit theatres worldwide on Friday. As Jigra marks Alia’s first Bollywood release since Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023), directed by Karan Johar, the excitement around the film has been significant, prompting the makers to release a dubbed Telugu version as well.

However, the timing of Jigra’s release is puzzling, given that director TJ Gnanavel’s Tamil film Vettaiyan, featuring a stellar cast including Rajinikanth, Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati and Manju Warrier, hit the screens just a day earlier. With its star power, Vettaiyan is expected to dominate the box office over the next few days, possibly extending into the coming weeks. Moreover, early figures suggest that Jigra could also face further challenges from the Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri-starrer Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, which might affect its overall performance too.

By 5 pm on Friday, Jigra had recorded an India nett collection of Rs 1.61 crore, with occupancy rates of 10.48 per cent in the Hindi market and 8.18 per cent in the Telugu market. Meanwhile, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video had grossed Rs 1.76 crore and Vettaiyan had amassed Rs 8.58 crore in the domestic market by this time during the day. Nonetheless, Jigra’s opening day figures are expected to rise as the day continues, particularly given its decent turnout during morning screenings itself despite being a weekday and facing strong competition.

It may be mentioned here that on their release day, Stree 2, Fighter, Shaitaan, Crew and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya — which occupy the top five spots in the list of highest-grossing Hindi films of 2024 — had registered an India nett collection of Rs 51.8 crore, Rs 22.5 crore, Rs 14.75 crore, Rs 9.25 crore and Rs 6.7 crore, respectively.

In her review of Jigra, The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta wrote, “Alia Bhatt’s performances usually have at least a couple of distinctive notes. Here, badass replacing vulnerability, those edges are blunted. Jigra becomes a stretch, of both patience and credulity.”

While Alia Bhatt was last seen in the Hollywood spy action thriller Heart of Stone (2023), alongside Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan, Jigra is Vedang Raina’s second film following his debut in director Zoya Akhtar’s teen musical comedy The Archies (2023). Vasan Bala’s previous directorial work was Monica, O My Darling (2022).
