Actor Juhi Chawla got married to businessman Jay Mehta when she was at the peak of her career in the 1990s, but they tied the knot secretly without letting the world know about it. In an earlier interview, Juhi shared that at the time, many actors did the same thing and she could get away with it in the 1990s because there were no cameras on mobile phones, so there was no possibility of the news getting out. Explaining why she married Jay secretly, Juhi said that she did so because she was afraid of losing her career. Juhi and Jay got married in 1995. They are parents to Jhanvi and Arjun.
Talking to former journalist Rajeev Masand on his YouTube channel some years ago, Juhi shared, “I was just about established and just starting to do well. That’s the time Jay was serenading me, and I was afraid of losing my career just when I kind of got there. So, I wanted to carry on and this seemed the midway, that let’s keep it quiet and it’s okay, you carry on working.”
Juhi said that she was going through a difficult time then, as her mother had just passed away and she felt like she was losing everything. “That year my mother passed away as well so I had another tragedy and that was a very difficult time for me as well because I felt I was going to lose everything I had, everything I loved, my work an my mum,” she said.
In a recent chat at an event hosted by Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Juhi had opened up about how her mother-in-law cancelled her grand wedding plans because Juhi was getting overwhelmed. Juhi said that her mother-in-law recalled almost 2000 invitations that had gone out to guests all over the world. “She convinced the family to not have the big wedding and I got married at home with just the family and closest friends in attendance. So with just 80-90 people present. Imagine your mother-in-law cancelling the invites that had already been sent out,” she shared.
